This happened at my hall when I was maybe 12 or 13. A disfellowshipped woman came to the Sunday meeting. After the meeting she promptly left the hall. A few minutes later someone came into the hall and said her car wouldn't start. What to do, what to do? A couple of elders looked outside and started debating whether or not it would be ok to go help her out. Would it be possible to jump start the car without talking to her? Would helping her make others think that there were exeptions to the no acknowledgement rule? Finally they concluded that the Good Samaritan principle would be applied so the only decision that had to be made was who was best qualified to go assist her. While the elders were discussing this a young brother in the congregation, who was viewed as a potential troublemaker because he had longer hair and liked sports cars, pulled his car (it was a Camero that was hotter than hot) along the disabled car and retrieved jumper cables and a tool box from his trunk. He fiddled under the hood of the dead car, most likely tightening a loose fan belt, hooked up the cables and got the disfellowshipped woman's car started. The woman not only thanked him but gave him a hug (gasp) for his trouble. The elders rewarded the young brother by giving him a good talking to later. The congregation rewarded both of them by starting rumors about the two of them "seeing" each other. The incident did cause a bit of a stir. At the time, keep in mind that I was pretty young and impressionable, I thought it was dangerous for the young brother to get that close to a disfellowshipped person. Looking back the whole thing was just insane.

Firearms And Shooting...
by Justice-One ini thought i would open up a thread on firearms and shooting.
personally i was raised around firearms as my dad was not a jw.
some of my earliest memories are of my dad teaching me how to put a round in a fleas ass at 200 meters.

I was raised in a house that had and has firearms. As far as the witlesses were concerned, having firearms where I lived was just a matter of course. Most people in my congregation had them. I have hunted deer and a variety of birds. As far as I can see, unless you are a vegetarian you really shouldn't be concerned about someone taking an animal for food. Those little styrofoam and gladwrap packages of meat that are sold got to the grocery store because somebody killed an animal. Hunters are a lot closer to the source of some of their protein than mere shoppers.
Anyway, I own a few firearms...a couple of .22 rifles (one of them is a 1906 Winchester pump that was originally owned by my great grandfather), a 12 gauge shotgun I bought when I was 14, a 30.06 I bought when I was 15, and my first handgun, a Smith and Wesson PD4040 that I purchased immediately after receiving a permit to carry a pistol. For those of you that think that gun owners are uneducated hicks, I have a Bachelors in Business Administration and am halfway through an MBA program.

1. A man without a gun is robbed in his home. The person lets the crook take everything and does as they say, praying that he and his daughter will live through the ordeal. Then they call the police after the crook leaves, and their insurance company. They lived.
I assume the above in a hypothetical. So what exactly saved the lives of the man and daughter? The crook being a non-violent robber or the praying?
Here is a true story. A gentleman who lived in a quiet, working class neighborhood in my town walked a block to a liquor store to pick up a 12 pack of beer. He had done this countless times during the 20+ years he had lived in his home. On his way back to his house he was confronted by two males ages 17 and 18. The teenagers demanded his wallet and his beer. He complied. The robbers, ages 17 and 18, then beat him to the ground. The witness who called 911 said that the beating continued even though sirens could be heard approaching. The witness also said that the robbers used the 12 pack of beer as a club during the beating. The victim was a married 49 year old father of two and a grandfather. He was an LPN who worked at a nursing home and was known as being a very gentle, peaceful, resonable man and those who were friends of his doubted that he fought back. The beating occured 40 feet from his house. He DIED!
I guess using your model of what to do in the situation he should have prayed, and maybe he did. Maybe he should have taken some defense classes to learn what to do in this situation including the use of a firearm when forced by the aggressors to do so. Do what you want, but I don't think being meek, praying to god and hoping for the best is really all that effective.
2 teens arrested in fatal beating
Two teenage suspects in the robbery and beating death of a Duluth man are expected to be charged this morning, St. Louis County officials said Monday.
The pair — a 17-year-old from Duluth and an 18-year-old from rural Cloquet — are accused of fatally assaulting Donald Duane O'Brien, 49, on Friday evening as he walked home from a liquor store a block away from where he lived in the Gary-New Duluth neighborhood. O'Brien died Saturday night.
Police have said the two suspects repeatedly kicked and stomped O'Brien's head in order to steal his wallet. His family told the Duluth News Tribune that O'Brien also had been beaten with the 12-pack of beer he was carrying.
He was beaten so severely that his face was unrecognizable, his family said.
The 17-year-old was arrested later Friday night. The 18-year-old was arrested Sunday.
On Monday, prosecutors declined to comment on the case, including whether the 17-year-old would face charges in adult court.
O'Brien's death is the first homicide in Duluth this year.

It has been a while since I've attended meetings, but I grew up in a devout Witness family in rural Minnesota. Almost everyone in the congregation had firearms of some sort. I do remember that at least two elders in the congregation had pistols. One of them always carried his Colt .45 when he went snowmobiling in case he saw dogs gone wild attacking deer. I'm pretty sure jobs that required carrying firearms were prohibited though. Other jobs were just frowned on unless they were janitorial in nature with plenty of free time for the "work." I have a conceal carry permit too.

They finally made it to my door
by Fatfreek inan suv full of jw's pulled into my country home driveway and a woman and her pre-teen son came to the door.
i greeted them with a warm smile, wondering to myself if they knew who i was.
i doubt they did as they presented me with the single sheet invitation to the little rock district assembly to be held july 14-16. .

Some witnesses stopped by my house today also. I wasn't at home so they left an invite to the assembly and a back issue of the Awake...I mean a way back issue from 1998. Someone must have been cleaning out their literature drawer. I had a pretty good laugh at one of the titles in the "Next Issue" box. It was "The Cock -of-the-Rock: An Amazonian Jungle Beauty." Sounded like the title of a prison themed porn flick.

I had my cat put to sleep this morning. He had really gone down hill overnight. I asked the vet if she thought the catheter breaking was not preventable. After she explained what happened I concluded that the catheter breaking was not forseeable. She was baffled at my cats immune system response and even consulted with the U of MN trying to figure it out. The final bill was $920...worth every penny. He was a great buddy but nothing lasts forever. Now I need to decide if I should adopt another one to keep my other cat company. Thanks for the replies to my original post. It was interesting reading.

I have had a couple of cats for years. Last Thursday I noticed one of them could not urinate. I have seen this before so I assumed that he had a stone blocking up his works. Off to the vet and the vet confirmed it was a stone. Usually unblocking the system is pretty straight forward - sedate the cat, insert a catheter, and let the urine flush the stone out of the bladder. The cat has to spend the night at the clinic and the procedure is about $300 and that is fine by me. After all, this cat has been here for years. The vet calls later and tells me that the catheter went in fine and sure enough the stone flushed out. The catheter would be removed the next day to make sure that everything was out of the bladder and then I could come get my cat. The next call from the vet was to inform me that while taking the catheter out it broke. Apparently another stone caused it to wedge so now the cat has to be sedated again so the broken bit could be removed. Hopefully no surgery would be involved. The next call from the vet was to let me know that the broken bit of catheter had been removed, along with the problem stone, but that some minor surgery had to be done to accomplish this and the cat has to stay in the clinic for at least another day to make sure his sewn up urethra is not leaking. The next call from the vet was to inform me that the urethra was indeed leaking and another catheter had to inserted with the hope that the leak would heal up after a couple of days. The vet also said that at this point the odds were 50-50 that the cat would pull through. This afternoon the vet called and let me know that she did some blood work on the cat and found that his immune system was suppressed (he is FIV negative and all shots are current) which explained why he wasn't healing up like he should. The vet gave him a big dose of steroids in an effort to jump start his immune system. The vet ended the conversation by saying tomorrow we could discuss further treatment and, of course, the option of putting him down.
I'm thinking at this point my vet bill is probably pushing $1,000 after 5 nights in the clinic and the various procedures. I have the same feeling now that I get on those very rare occasions I find myself in a casino: "I'm down but this run of bad luck is bound to turn. Just a few more bets." Where do you draw the line and toss in the towel? I stopped by the clinic to give him a good scratch and he purred a lot. It seemed like he wanted nothing more then to have that plastic funnel thing taken off his neck so he could give his hinder a good licking. Pretty good spirits for all he has gone through the last few days. This is the part of having pets that sucks.

I had a discussion about the blood fractions issue with my mom a while back and she confessed that she was troubled by this particular "new light" or whatever its called. I made sure to point out that whatever the JW position is regarding what is acceptable to take regarding blood fractions, that until witlesses were allowed to roll up their sleeves and donate a pint to replace the fractions they were using, they were parasites on the community. Using a product that comes from blood others donated and then not donating blood in return is truly selfish. Mom doesn't try to draw me into discussions about jw crap anymore.
